Influence of posture and coil position on the safety of a WPT system while recharging a compact EV
In this study, the human exposure to the magnetic field emitted by a wireless power transfer (WPT) system during the static recharging operations of a compact electric vehicle (EV) is evaluated. Specifically, the influence of the posture of realistic anatomical models, both in standing and lying positions, either inside or outside the EV, is considered. Aligned and misaligned coil configurations of the WPT system placed both in the rear and front position of the car floor are considered as well. Compliance with safety standards and guidelines has proven that reference levels are exceeded in the extreme case of a person lying on the floor with a hand close to the WPT coils, whereas the system is always compliant with the basic restrictions, at least for the considered scenarios
Chassis influence on the exposure assessment of a compact ev during wpt recharging operations
In this study, the external magnetic field emitted by a wireless power transfer (WPT) system and the internal electric field induced in human body models during recharging operations of a compact electric vehicle (EV) are evaluated. The magneticfield is calculated with a hybrid scheme coupling the boundary element method with the surface impedance boundary conditions in order to fit the multiscale open-boundary characteristics of the problem. A commercial software is then used to perform numerical dosimetry. Specifically, two realistic anatomical models, both in a driving position and in a standing posture, are considered, and the chassis of the EV is modeled either as a currently employed aluminum alloy and as a futuristic carbon fiber composite panel. Aligned and misaligned coil configurations of the WPT system are considered as well. The analysis of the obtained results shows that the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) reference levels are exceeded in the driving position, especially for the carbon fiber chassis, whereas the system is compliant with the basic restrictions, at least for the considered scenarios
Handling oversampling in dynamic networks using link prediction
Oversampling is a common characteristic of data representing dynamic
networks. It introduces noise into representations of dynamic networks, but
there has been little work so far to compensate for it. Oversampling can affect
the quality of many important algorithmic problems on dynamic networks,
including link prediction. Link prediction seeks to predict edges that will be
added to the network given previous snapshots. We show that not only does
oversampling affect the quality of link prediction, but that we can use link
prediction to recover from the effects of oversampling. We also introduce a
novel generative model of noise in dynamic networks that represents
oversampling. We demonstrate the results of our approach on both synthetic and

Use of bremsstrahlung radiation to identify hidden weak beta- sources: feasibility and possible use in radio-guided surgery
The recent interest in beta- radionuclides for radio-guided surgery derives
from the feature of the beta radiation to release energy in few millimeters of
tissue. Such feature can be used to locate residual tumors with a probe located
in its immediate vicinity, determining the resection margins with an accuracy
of millimeters. The drawback of this technique is that it does not allow to
identify tumors hidden in more than few mm of tissue. Conversely, the
bremsstrahlung X-rays emitted by the interaction of the beta- radiation with
the nuclei of the tissue are relatively penetrating. To complement the beta-
probes, we have therefore developed a detector based on cadmium telluride, an
X-ray detector with a high quantum efficiency working at room temperature. We
measured the secondary emission of bremsstrahlung photons in a target of
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with a density similar to living tissue. The
results show that this device allows to detect a 1 ml residual or lymph-node
with an activity of 1 kBq hidden under a layer of 10 mm of PMMA with a 3:1
signal to noise, i.e. with a five sigma discrimination in less than 5 s
Uncertainty Quantification for SAE J2954 Compliant Static Wireless Charge Components
The present work aims at quantifying how, and how much, the uncertainties on the components and material parameters of a wireless power transfer (WPT) system for the static charge of electric vehicles affect the overall efficiency and functionality of the final produced device. With the aim of considering the perspective of a possible industrial developer, the parameters selected for the uncertainty quantification are chosen to be the capacitance values of the compensation capacitors and the electromagnetic material parameters used for the construction of the magnetic structure of a WPT system, i.e. the parameters of the elements to be purchased. The analysis is based on a standard system among the ones provided by the current SAE J2954 recommended practice
Efficient LZ78 factorization of grammar compressed text
We present an efficient algorithm for computing the LZ78 factorization of a
text, where the text is represented as a straight line program (SLP), which is
a context free grammar in the Chomsky normal form that generates a single
string. Given an SLP of size representing a text of length , our
algorithm computes the LZ78 factorization of in time
and space, where is the number of resulting LZ78 factors.
We also show how to improve the algorithm so that the term in the
time and space complexities becomes either , where is the length of the
longest LZ78 factor, or where is a quantity
which depends on the amount of redundancy that the SLP captures with respect to
substrings of of a certain length. Since where
is the alphabet size, the latter is asymptotically at least as fast as
a linear time algorithm which runs on the uncompressed string when is
constant, and can be more efficient when the text is compressible, i.e. when

Analysis of dynamic wireless power transfer systems based on behavioral modeling of mutual inductance
This paper proposes a system-level approach suitable to analyze the performance of a dynamic Wireless Power Transfer System (WPTS) for electric vehicles, accounting for the uncertainty in the vehicle trajectory. The key-point of the approach is the use of an analytical behavioral model that relates mutual inductance between the coil pair to their relative positions along the actual vehicle trajectory. The behavioral model is derived from a limited training data set of simulations, by using a multi-objective genetic programming algorithm, and is validated against experimental data, taken from a real dynamic WPTS. This approach avoids the massive use of computationally expensive 3D finite element simulations, that would be required if this analysis were performed by means of look-up tables. This analytical model is here embedded into a system-level circuital model of the entire WPTS, thus allowing a fast and accurate analysis of the sensitivity of the performance as the actual vehicle trajectory deviates from the nominal one. The system-level analysis is eventually performed to assess the sensitivity of the power and efficiency of the WPTS to the vehicle misalignment from the nominal trajectory during the dynamic charging process
Beyond the required LISA free-fall performance: new LISA pathfinder results down to 20 μHz
In the months since the publication of the first results, the noise performance of LISA Pathfinder has improved because of reduced Brownian noise due to the continued decrease in pressure around the test masses, from a better correction of noninertial effects, and from a better calibration of the electrostatic force actuation. In addition, the availability of numerous long noise measurement runs, during which no perturbation is purposely applied to the test masses, has allowed the measurement of noise with good statistics down to 20 μHz. The Letter presents the measured differential acceleration noise figure, which is at (1.74±0.05) fm s^{-2}/sqrt[Hz] above 2 mHz and (6±1)×10 fm s^{-2}/sqrt[Hz] at 20 μHz, and discusses the physical sources for the measured noise. This performance provides an experimental benchmark demonstrating the ability to realize the low-frequency science potential of the LISA mission, recently selected by the European Space Agency
State space modelling and data analysis exercises in LISA Pathfinder
LISA Pathfinder is a mission planned by the European Space Agency to test the
key technologies that will allow the detection of gravitational waves in space.
The instrument on-board, the LISA Technology package, will undergo an
exhaustive campaign of calibrations and noise characterisation campaigns in
order to fully describe the noise model. Data analysis plays an important role
in the mission and for that reason the data analysis team has been developing a
toolbox which contains all the functionalities required during operations. In
this contribution we give an overview of recent activities, focusing on the
improvements in the modelling of the instrument and in the data analysis

A strategy to characterize the LISA-Pathfinder cold gas thruster system
